Budgie
“Budgie” is a British musical that premiered in 1988. The musical was based on the popular 1970s British television series of the same name, which starred Adam Faith in the title role. The TV series revolved around the character of Ronald "Budgie" Bird, a small-time petty crook and lovable rogue who often found himself in humorous and precarious situations.
The stage adaptation of "Budgie" featured Adam Faith reprising his role as Budgie, while Anita Dobson, best known for her role as Angie Watts in the soap opera "EastEnders," portrayed the character of Budgie's love interest, Jean.
The musical was written by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall, with music by Mort Shuman and lyrics by Don Black. Shuman created an original score that captured the spirit of the era and the character's escapades.
The story of “Budgie” follows the misadventures of the eponymous character as he navigates the criminal underworld while dealing with personal relationships and his own aspirations. The musical incorporates humour, drama, and catchy songs to bring Budgie's story to life on stage.
The original production of the play Budgie (by Don Black, Willis Hall, Mort Shuman, and Keith Waterhouse) by Summit Productions, ran from 18th October 1988 to 21st January 1989, at Cambridge Theatre, London.
